Typical Firefighter Interview Questions: What To Expect

An oral, in person interview is a certain guarantee while going through the process of becoming a firefighter. An interview can make or break a person’s chances of getting hired which is why it’s so important to prepare ahead and anticipate a myriad of different questions.  You can expect similar questions if you are looking to become a volunteer firefighter.

Prepare for General Interview Questions
Many questions may or may not be related directly to firefighting, but help the interviewer get a better grasp of your personality and motivations. Often times, these questions have no “right or wrong” answers, but how you answer them can make you stand apart from other candidates.

  • Tell us a little about yourself
  • What do you know about our fire department?
  • How have you prepared for this interview?
  • Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
  • What is your strongest attribute? What is your weakest?
  • What do you do in your spare time? What hobbies or interests do you enjoy?

Is This Your Passion?
While these may seem like an easy interview questions in theory, preparing answers that are well thought out, meaningful and offer personal experiences is very important.

  • Why do you want to be a firefighter?
  • Describe your education, training and prior experience
  • What have you done to prepare for a career in this industry?
  • Why will you make a good firefighter?
  • What is the most appealing/least appealing aspect of firefighting?
  • What is the most important personality trait that a firefighter should have?
  • Why do you want to be a firefighter at our station/town/city?

Are You a Good Fit?
Determining whether or not you’ll be a good fit for a fire department is one of the goals for the interviewer to determine.
